Janice “Jan” Tolifson

Janice (Jan) Tolifson, 74, of Fergus Falls, died Friday, August 7, 2015 at Golden Living Center, Henning, MN. Janice (Jan) Elaine Tolifson was born February 18, 1941 in Fergus Falls the daughter of Delbert (Del) and Dorothy (Hotchkiss) Porter. She was baptized in Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Fergus Falls and confirmed in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo. She graduated from Alexander Ramsey High School in St. Paul in 1959. Jan and Shorty Spencer were married in 1960 in St. Paul. They had 2 sons, Todd and Shane. In 1964 she married Arlan Tolifson and had a daughter, Lisa and son, Jay. Janice lived many places as Shorty was in the army and Arlan built golf courses all over the United States. Some of her residences were North Carolina, Texas, Germany, Tennessee, Georgia, Montana, South Dakota and then back to Minnesota in 1987. She was a Boy Scout leader, Girl Scout leader and girls’ softball coach. Jan managed fast food restaurants for 35 years. She was a life member of the VFW, member of JSEC and The MN Liquor & Beverage Association when she was manager of the Elks Lodge #1093. Jan was a Hospice and Broen Home volunteer. She also read newspapers on the radio for the blind through the Lions Club. Jan loved people. Her last job, before retiring, was 9 years at Lakeway Market as cashier. She met and made many friends over those 9 years. It was hard for her to leave. Jan enjoyed reading, spendingtime with her children and their families, cooking, playing games on the computer and visiting with relatives and friends. Jan is survived by her children Todd (Teresa) Tolifson, Shane (Vicki) Spencer, Lisa Lewis, Jay Tolifson; 7 grandchildren, Cory, Samantha, Ashley, Allison, Sierra, Chris and Kyle; a greatgranddaughter, Ella Mae; siblings, Larry (Terri) Porter, Dell (Dar) Halvorson, Jennie Porter (Leon); cousins, Howard Mondry, Dick, Molly and Jim Irvine, Judy Bracey, Janet Lee Fakler, Georgia and Pat Sagerhorn, Pam Dean and Harley Hotchkissand many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Del and Dorothy Porter; maternal grandparents, Bob and Elaine Hotchkiss, paternal grandparents, Tom and Nora Porter, Mamie and Milton Piersal and Lloyd Ollom. Funeral Services: Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls Visitation: Friday from 5 to 8 PM with a prayer service at 7:30 PM at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and resuming for one hour prior to the service. Cemetery: St. Otto’s Catholi Cemetery, Fergus Falls Funeral Home: Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls Condolences: www.GlendeNilson.com
