British Jazz Vocalist Polly Gibbons Performs at AC4TA on Oct. 24
Fergus Falls — British vocalist Polly Gibbons is one of the most respected and talked about young singer/songwriters of her generation. Being nominated for a BBC Jazz Award back in 2006, with no album release to her name, is a clear indication of just how special a singer and performer Gibbons is.
Gibbons will perform with her band at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at A Center for the Arts in downtown Fergus Falls. This is the first performance in AC4TA’s 2015-16 Center Series. Individual tickets are available for $22 adults and $6 students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.FergusArts.org, by phone at 218-736-5453, or at our box office at 124 W. Lincoln Ave., downtown Fergus Falls.
Much esteemed by her contemporaries, Gibbons has built a reputation as being an original and gifted voice. With warm, rich, soulful vocals and an innate blues sensibility, Gibbons has been likened to many of the jazz and soul greats bringing her own storytelling and earnest depth to performances, along with her unique humor and fun. Having developed her craft over the past decade, Gibbons has performed at all the leading UK jazz clubs and international festivals.
Gibbons’ influences are brilliant, broad and inspired – from the poetry of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen to the be-bop of Charlie Parker; the deep wails of Mahalia Jackson’s gospel to the emotional depth of Donny Hathaway, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone; with the soul of Marvin Gaye, the blues of Buddy Guy, and more contemporary brilliance than the sounds of Prince and D’Angelo.
“My Own Company,” her debut UK jazz album, was released to critical acclaim in August 2014. The album features original material and won the 2014 Indie International Song Writing Competition. Gibbons signed to acclaimed US jazz label Resonance Records at the beginning of 2014 and soon after recorded the album “Many Faces of Love.” Having completed a highly successful preliminary fall tour in Florida, New York, Boston and Minneapolis, the album was released globally on Feb. 4, 2015.
