LB Homes and Lakeland Hospice offer program on Alzheimer’s and Grief

(Fergus Falls, MN)

A free, educational program produced by the Hospice Foundation of America titled The Longest Loss: Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia will be offered at the LB Homes / Lakeland Hospice offices, 805 East Channing Ave. Fergus Falls, on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 1 – 4 p.m.  Registration is requested by calling (218) 998-1400.

A two and a half hour limited-release dvd presentation will be shown featuring experts in the field of dementia and grief support.  Hospice Foundation of America has been producing educational programming regarding living with grief for the past 22 years, with a different topic each year.

This year’s topic of Alzheimer’s and dementia will focus on the grief process that can start from diagnosis.  Often times with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, grief doesn’t wait for death.  From the initial diagnosis to over a span of what may be a decade or more, losses associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia become a pervasive part of life for millions of patients, their families and friends.

After their loved one passes away, survivors’ grieving may be complicated by the very nature of a lengthy disease process that often has changed their relationship with the deceased.  Through a combination of candid, compelling, pre-recorded interviews and in–studio discussions, experts will talk about how to best help patients and families cope with the loss and grief associated with these progressive illnesses.

Following the pre-recorded program, there will be a live panel of local experts including Jess Steinbrenner, MSW Program Manager from the Minnesota/North Dakota Alzheimer’s Association and Marie Braaten, APRN, BC, GNP who attends to the elderly of Fergus Falls by making rounds at Broen Home and area nursing homes.
