This year’s fundraising focus is the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center (PWLC)
Greenhouse Operation. The greenhouse programs at the PWLC promote many
educational opportunities for students including: critical thinking skills, journaling, and
problem solving. In this one of kind program the students have extra-ordinary
opportunities to learn native plants and scrubs, seed identification, prairie restoration,
and general information on plant care and growth. Plants grown and cared for by these
students will be planted in area prairie restorations, benefitting all of us.
The Friends of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center was formed in 1989 to lead the way in
transforming the vision of establishing a learning center located on the prairie into a reality.
The mission of the Friends is “to enhance and promote understanding of the prairie pothole
region, primarily through support of the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center.” The Friends group
was instrumental in raising more than $3 million for initial construction at the PWLC, and
today it continues to support the nationally recognized environmental education offered at the
PWLC through volunteer time, and by securing funding to assist with programming and
events held here each year.
