Lakeland Hospice in Fergus Falls is currently seeking volunteers for a new therapy dog program. This program provides visits by registered therapy dogs and their owners to people of all ages receiving hospice care. The purpose of the program is to promote love, support, comfort, and animal companionship to people who desire this experience at the end of life.
Interested volunteers should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with many different populations. Potential therapy dogs must be a minimum of one year of age and be very calm, gentle, polite, and interact appropriately and comfortably with unfamiliar people in unfamiliar settings.
All potential therapy dogs and their handlers are screened carefully prior to acceptance into the comprehensive therapy dog training program. Therapy dog training for the owner and dog is provided at no cost. Assessments are to take place mid-May. Training sessions will be held this summer in June.
